SMART Protocol — 5 Core Steps
01
Pre-procedural preparation
Supplements and protective measures taken before removal to support your body's detoxification.
02
Sectioning the filling
Cutting amalgam into chunks (not grinding) minimizes the mercury vapor surface area released.
03
Rubber dam isolation
A barrier prevents mercury particles and vapor from entering your mouth and airway.
04
High-volume evacuation
Powerful suction directly at the tooth captures mercury vapor and particles throughout.
05
Air filtration & post-care
HEPA and activated carbon filtration removes airborne mercury from the treatment room.

Common Questions

Questions patients ask us

See all FAQs →
Are mercury fillings dangerous?
The evidence is genuinely mixed. Major bodies like the FDA have historically considered amalgam safe for most adults, but now recommend alternatives when feasible. We cover the full evidence picture here.
Is removal covered by insurance?
Standard removal is sometimes covered if the filling is deteriorating. The SMART protocol premium is usually not covered. See our Insurance Coverage Guide for details.
Is SMART removal safer than regular removal?
SMART is designed to minimize mercury vapor exposure. The protective steps are logical. However, definitive long-term clinical benefit vs. standard removal hasn't been proven in large randomized trials.
Should I remove stable fillings that aren't bothering me?
This is a personal decision. Every removal carries some procedural mercury exposure, which is why many practitioners recommend leaving stable amalgam in place unless clinically necessary.
